Discovery Becomes HD Anchor Tenant for Intelsat Bird

Discovery Communications, the firm behind the Discovery Channel and its many channel offspring now with operations in more than 170 countries and territories, said it has chosen the PAS-12 satellite from Intelsat to provide Discovery HD for Europe. Intelsat said it views Discovery as the anchor tenant for PAS-12, which it said in a statement it plans to use primarily as "a high-powered distribution alternative to new channels looking to deliver HD programming across Europe."

The satellite will distribute Discovery HD (originating from Discovery's European headquarters in London) to all of Europe. GlobeCast Europe will uplink the content at its Brookman's Park teleport in the United Kingdom. Intelsat, headquartered in Washington, D.C., currently provides global distribution for other standard-def Discovery channels.
