DIRECTV adds MPEG-4 AVC encoders in preparation for HD channel expansion

DIRECTV will use the Harmonic Electra 7000 HD H.264 encoder for efficient bandwidth use as it rolls out up to 100 new national HD channels by the end of 2007.

DIRECTV has deployed Harmonic's Electra 7000 HD MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) encoders for its national HD channel expansion.

The direct-to-home satellite service will use the encoders, the Harmonic ProStream 1000 stream processing platform with DiviTrackIP distributed statistical multiplexing and Harmonic's NMX Digital Service Manager as part of its latest HD channel lineup expansion, which is expected to add up to 100 national HD channels by year’s end.
