Democrat victory could stall telecom bill

Up until November, Republicans had hoped that the lame duck Congress might finish work on the pending package of telecom legislation. Now, with the Democrat victory in Congress, the prospects for new telecom legislation for this year appear all but dead.

Last June, the Senate Commerce Committee approved a bill authored by Chairman Ted Stevens (R-AK). Odds of getting it passed during the lame duck session dimmed after the Democrat victory and the defeat of two of the bill’s strong supporters, Sens. Conrad Burns (R-MT) and George Allen (R-VA).
