Responding to the 'Going Digital' report from the UK's Consumer Panel, which shows vulnerable people aren't getting the information and technical support they need to switch to digital TV, David Sinclair, head of policy for Help the Aged, has replied:
"These findings are very worrying. For nearly half the older people in the UK, television is their main form of company, so it is essential that switchover for them is as hassle-free as possible.
"Responsibility for providing older people with sound, practical advice lies with Government, the voluntary sector and the private sector - they all must work closely with Digital UK to ensure that older people aren't confused. A mandatory labelling system for digital televisions should be introduced so consumers can make informed choices and aren't duped into buying products that won't work after switchover.
"As the transfer to digital looms for other areas of the UK, lessons must be learned so it is not the most vulnerable members of society who are left behind."
