In researching asset management, CBS News has determined that it needs to have fast access to archival news footage for five years. After that, the footage can be stored on offline on media that’s not as quickly accessible.
Frank M. Governale, vice president of operations at CBS News, said that network research had determined that the odds of needing to access archival news footage is 98 percent in the five years after it is recorded. After five years, the odds drop to two percent.
Governale revealed the information at a Pro-MPEG MXF Networking Seminar November 11 in New York City.
CBS plans to use an as yet undetermined tape backup system for long term archives, Governale said. Whether the original news footage will be retained, he noted, is still a matter of debate within the network.
