Scientific-Atlanta's new Point of Deployment (POD) module has received qualified status from CableLabs, meaning that new DTV's will be able to receive and decrypt digital cable programming using a POD instead of a stand-alone set-top.
S-A created the POD, a small plug in card, to further the "Plug and Play" MOU between the consumer electronics makers and cable operators. When consumers purchase a TV with a POD slot, they can sign up for cable service and receive the POD to authorize their DTV to receive digital video services.
POD 1.1 was introduced at the NCTA show in Chicago this week and should be available in fall 2003.
