Cable Touts HDTV Access

Ninety million U.S. homes can now receive HDTV service, according to a recent survey released by the National Cable and Telecommunications Association (NCTA). The 177 U.S. markets include the top 100 designated market areas.

According to the survey, the number of local digital broadcast stations being carried by cable systems has increased nearly 50 percent. NCTA also said that the number of households subscribing to the service hit the 70 million mark last December.

Cable networks that offer HDTV programming in some of all of their schedules include Discovery HD Theater, ESPN HD, HBO HDTV, NBA-TV, Showtime HD and more.
By next year, ESPN2 and the Outdoor Channel will also offer high-definition programming.
