BBC Technology unveils Colledia at NAB2003

BBC Technology’s unveiled its Colledia flagship media lifecycle management product family at NAB2003. The Colledia enables broadcasters, film companies and other media-driven organizations of all sizes to produce high-quality content more efficiently throughout the media creation, management and distribution lifecycle.

Built on the Colledia Workflow platform, BBC Technology will bring to market the following products: Colledia for Sports, Colledia for News and Colledia for Production. Colledia Control, previously known as Broadcast Network Control System (BNCS), is also available. Colledia Workflow consists of an integrated media platform and associated tools and uses a common set of APIs and standards (such as AAF, MOS, SMEF, SNMP, MXF and MPEG); it is configured to manage the media content and workflows in different broadcast environments such as Colledia for Sports, Colledia for News and Colledia for Production.

At NAB2003, BBC Technology announced that ESPN had selected Colledia for Sports. ESPN will also use elements of Colledia Control; systems integration; training; and operational support. ESPN selected BBC Technology after reviewing proposals from a wide range of software and equipment manufacturers, and system integrators. BBC Technology will support ESPN in the deployment of its Digital Conversion Project, which will transform the company's current production, presentation and archive operations into a fully digital, tapeless environment.

According to BBC Technology, ESPN's search for an enterprise-wide, digital media infrastructure that supports real-time and pre-edited sports production and playout led them to Colledia. ESPN's implementation of BBC Technology's products and services will see integration between IT and broadcast environments, incorporating hardware and software components from partners such as Quantel.

Also part of the Colledia product portfolio is Colledia Control. It provides flexible and reliable control across all areas of broadcast infrastructure and operations, across modern and legacy equipment, from one user-friendly, touch screen interface. The product improves productivity and cost efficiency by enabling a single operator to manage an entire broadcasting infrastructure and operation, from content creation to distribution. Colledia Control can interface with more than 5,000 different pieces of broadcast equipment.

DIRECTV is deploying Colledia Control, as part of an initiative to expand its local programming from 52 current markets to 100 by the end of 2003. Since implementation, the DBS service provider has successfully increased local channel collections from cities throughout the U.S. for re-broadcasting to its customers in those local markets, without significantly increasing its operating costs or sacrificing broadcast quality.
