ATG Broadcast upgrades National Geographic Channel in London

The National Geographic Channel’s new audio suite includes an Avid Digidesign Pro-Tools editor running on an Apple Macintosh G5 workstation.

ATG Broadcast, a UK-based systems integrator, has upgraded the post-production facilities for the National Geographic Channel at its new location at Shepherds Bush in London.

Completed this summer, National Geographic Channel’s new UK post facility has an audio suite, viewing room, online and offline edit rooms and an on-air graphics suite equipped with Apple Final Cut Pro and Adobe graphics software.

Most of the creative work performed in the new installation consists of the production of programming promos. These are edited from incoming source tapes, initially using Avid Xpress Pro and Media Composer offline editors, and then conformed on Avid Adrenalines in the online suite.

The edited video is then taken to the audio suite where local-language and local-dialect voiceovers are produced. The new facility supports the channel’s regional channels operating in various European countries that play out from the Digital Media Center in Amsterdam.

The audio suite is a new system with an Avid Digidesign Pro-Tools 6.9 editor running on an Apple Macintosh G5. A Colin Broad synchronizer frame-locks the Pro-Tools to a Sony Digital-Betacam VTR and Tascam multi-track audio disk recorder. The Digidesign control surface forms the centerpiece of a Custom Consoles desk, offset to provide easy visual communication with an adjacent voiceover room.
