ABS-CBN deploys IP newsgathering system based on Streambox encoder

Philippine TV network ABS-CBN has deployed the Streambox ACT-L3 newsgathering solution to expand and enhance coverage of breaking news.

The IP-based solution, which includes a Streambox portable encoder, an IFB server and a decoder, facilitates video coverage while simplifying live and file-based reporting across the Philippines.

The Philippines consist of more than 7000 islands, which makes news logistics challenging, said Maria Ressa, senior VP for ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs. Using the new Streambox-based system, ABS-CBN can deploy smaller teams for breaking news and deliver stories faster, Ressa said.

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs provides news to viewers across the Philippines as well as to major news agencies around the world. Rather than relying on microwave-, satellite- and FTP-based solutions, the broadcaster now uses the Streambox solution to capture and stream video reports from a variety of locations at a fraction of the price of traditional newsgathering approaches.

Newsgathering operations at ABS-CBN service all media, including print, broadcast, broadband and mobile delivery. To reduce the cost of satellite transmission, camera operators and reporters are trained to capture video, edit and transmit the footage via broadband, Inmarsat’s Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) and High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) networks.
