ABC's Miller receives SMPTE's Progress Medal Award

William C. Miller, general manager of DTV Planning and Standards at the ABC Television Network received the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers award, the Progress Medal, on October 25, 2002, at the SMPTE Conference in Pasadena.

Miller was given the Progress Medal for his “many contributions and vision with respect to re-engineering the standards processes within SMPTE during his tenure as SMPTE Engineering Vice President.”

Currently general manager of DTV Planning and Standards at the ABC Television Network, Miller joined ABC as a technician in 1975, and has since held a variety of positions in the network’s technical, maintenance and engineering departments. Those positions include senior technical manager; manager, TOC Engineering Maintenance; senior engineer, Engineering Services; project manager, Engineering Services, and project manager, Broadcast Technology. Miller was responsible for the design and implementation of the digital signal distribution system within the ABC New York plant.

Miller has been actively involved in SMPTE’s standards development for more than 15 years. He is currently chairman of the Television Systems Technology Committee and is a member of most of the Society’s other engineering committees. From 1996 to 2001 he was SMPTE’s Engineering vice-president. He is a member of the Board of Editors of the SMPTE Journal, and has served on many of the Society’s administrative and awards committees.

Miller also participates in the technical work of the ATSC and is currently chairman of its Specialist Group on Video and Audio Coding. He represents ABC on ATSC’s Technical Subcommittee on Distribution.

Miller is a member of NATAS and was awarded an Emmy by them for his contributions to ABC’s coverage of the 1988 Winter Olympics.

The Progress Medal was first given in 1935.
