ABC News selects Thomson Grass Valley digital production equipment

The Grass Valley Kalypso Duo video production center from Thomson can be upgraded from SD to HD operation with a simple software installation.

ABC News has installed a full complement of Thomson Grass Valley's digital production and distribution equipment in its recently completed digital production studio, TV-3, in New York City.

The new studio, which serves as the new home to the network’s “World News Tonight,” as well as other ABC News programs, went live on the air in July.

Among the multi-format equipment supplied by Thomson are a Grass Valley Kalypso Duo video production center; two Apex 512 audio routing switchers; Trinix 512 and Trinix 256 video routers; and numerous Kameleon wideband and Gecko conversion modules. ABC News has also purchased the Grass Valley Jupiter router control system with Encore interface for the Kalypso, and Grass Valley Newton control system to manage its modular conversion products.

The video production center can be upgraded from SD to HD with a simple software installation. The Trinix digital video routing switcher family can handle SD and HD signals, from 3Mb/s to 1.5Gb/s, in the same frame. It features redundant cooling, proactive status monitoring, and front-loading, hot-swappable modules for servicing.
