Camera Corps assembles POV helmets for ITV ‘Gladiators’

Camera Corps point-of-view video helmets added a new dimension to the latest revival of the 1990s ITV hit “Gladiators” when it appeared on Sky One in May.

Two miniature cameras with integral lenses were provided, each mounted in a boxer's helmet and linked to a Sony MiniDV recorder in a backpack. A and B stages at Shepperton Studios in the UK were used for the latest “Gladiators” production, within 328ft of the Camera Corps headquarters.

The camera configuration used was originally developed for firemen, said Matt Frost, operations director of Camera Corps. The Sony MiniDV recorder was selected on the basis of its low-inertia scanners that can tolerate robust movement, he added.
