StarCity Recording captures Big & Rich

StarCity Recording, of Bethlehem, PA, was recently asked to handle acquisition and post-production for the “MusicLab at World Café Live,” featuring country stars Big & Rich and hosted by accomplished violinist Tracy Silverman. The “MusicLab” series showcases popular musical artists in an intimate Philadelphia club setting and is shown on iN DEMAND Networks.

Arranged on short notice to coincide with Big & Rich’s tour stop in the Philadelphia area, the biggest challenge for Jeff Glixman and Zak Rizvi of StarCity Recording was the limited time to set up for the performance. Using two True Precision 8 preamps fed into an Alesis HD 24 hard disk recorder and monitored back on a Soundcraft Spirit LX7, StarCity set up on stage just out of camera view so that the company handling the house mix could send StarCity a split of what they were feeding into the PA.

Once back in StarCity’s A-room to complete post-production on the program, Glixman and Rizvi realized that because of the lack of prep time, room microphones were never coordinated to capture the audience reaction. The problem was addressed by extracting the audience reaction from the camera audio tracks and adding them in post, creating a live feel for the program that meets the production goals of the series.
