Report shows strong WiMAX growth

The WiMAX equipment market nearly quadrupled from 2005 to 2006 with a worldwide jump in revenue of 286 percent to $549.2 million, according to a new report.

The report, “WiMAX and Outdoor Mesh Network Equipment” from Infonetics Research, found that revenue from fixed WiMAX services topped $180.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2006 — up 39 percent from 3Q06 — and revenue from the mobile WiMAX market reached $45.8 million.

Among market highlights reported by the research firm were:

  • The worldwide WiMAX equipment market is forecast to increase more than tenfold between 2006 and 2010, when it will reach almost $5.6 billion;
  • Mobile WiMAX is forecast to grow to $3.7 billion in 2010, a five-year compound annual growth rate of 201 percent.

WiMAX may provide a way to supplement existing ENG technology for the backhaul of stories to newsrooms. At last year’s NAB2006, KRON-TV in San Francisco disclosed that it was conducting test of a Bay Area WiMAX service to determine its suitability for news contribution from video journalists in the field.
