Pittsburgh ABC affiliate WTAE recently purchased a Utah Scientific UTAH-400 router to transmit SD and HD signals within the studio for two of its channels.
The UTAH-400 serves as the station's main router for transmitting and distributing signals throughout the facility and allows WTAE to manage various types of signal formats simultaneously. This allows the station to ensure that various audio and video fees are routed to the appropriate signal converters and on to the correct SD or HD channel.
Dave Kasparek, director of engineering for WTAE said the Hearst-Argyle owned station chose the UTAH-400 to help the station simultaneously convert to serial digital and embedded audio, as well as for automated recording of satellite-fed syndicated programming. Along with the UTAH-400 routing switcher, WTAE is outfitted with Harris and CompuSet automation software and records feeds for both channels on MediaStream 900 storage servers. WTAE expects the router to be the foundation for an eventual all-HD operation.
