Worldwide IPTV subscribers to reach 72.6 million by 2011, says MRG

Europe continues to lead the IPTV market throughout the world while markets in China, Eastern Europe, Korea and Russia take larger steps to growth, according to a new forecast from Multimedia Research Group (MRG).The number of IPTV subscribers is projected to increase from 13.5 million in 2007 to 72.6 million in 2011, about a 40 percent compounded annual growth rate.

The 2011 subscriber forecast is 9 million higher than MRG forecast in April 2007. Len Feldman, MRG director of IPTV analysis, attributed the upward revision to greater optimism about the probability for success in China, India and Korea.

The MRG report also has found that MPEG-4/AVC is consistently replacing MPEG-2 in new installations. It also found DSL continues as the dominant last-mile technology, but FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) is beginning to show more traction in both new and established neighborhoods.
