White Space: Group Warns FCC of International Consequences
It’s not just U.S. broadcasters that are worried about the interference from future devices operating in the unused DTV channels known as white spaces.
The North American Broadcasters Association, in a letter to the Canadian and Mexican equivalents of the FCC, warned of “the imminent danger of interference in the TV broadcast band, within and beyond the borders of Canada, Mexico and the United States” from the use of the technology.
NABA, based in Toronto and counting major broadcasters from all three North America countries among its members, advised Industry Canada and the Comision Federal de Telecomunicaciones to urge the FCC to rescind its “technically flawed” decision allowing unlicensed devices to operate on the frequencies.
The group attacks the record of spectrum-sensing technology, saying the testing so far casts significant doubt on the ability of the devices to function as promised.
“We urge you to consider the harmful implications this decision will have on your own individual administrations when having to deal with the interference fallout across North America from the deployment of these devices in the United States,” NABA said.
