Verizon Wireless, MediaFLO USA to offer live, full-length college football games on V CAST service

Verizon Wireless and QUALCOMM subsidiary MediaFLO USA are collaborating to broadcast more than 100 live full-length college football games on Verizon’s V CAST mobile TV service for the 2007 game season.

The games will air on CBS Mobile, ESPN Mobile TV, FOX Mobile and NBC2GO. Among the highlights are seven Notre Dame games on NBC2GO, with another two on ESPN Mobile TV. CBS Mobile will air up to 15 Southwestern Conference games, the Sun Bowl, Gator Bowl and up to 38 additional games covered through CSTV. FOX Sports Mobile will air several Big 12 games.

This is not the first time U.S. mobile users have been able to view live, full-length college football games on their handsets. The now-defunct Mobile ESPN service offered similar content last year before the MVNO was shut down by ESPN parent company Disney, primarily because of poor uptake. Verizon itself has aired hundreds of hours of live sports since it launched its V CAST service in March of this year, including coverage of the U.S. Open golf tournament, the X Games and other events.

Verizon has also added other programming options within the last month, most notably the addition of full-length videos of the “Late Show with David Letterman” and the “Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” on the CBS Mobile channel on the V CAST service.

The company has not made public the official number of subscribers to the V CAST service, though it has touted the fact that the service is now available in 37 markets across the United States, the most recent being Corpus Christi, TX.
