SureWest to Offer HD over IP Fiber

Starting in November, SureWest Communications, a broadband video firm, will offer HD video commercially over its Internet Protocol-based FTTP (fiber-to-the-premise) network. The Roseville, Calif.-based company will take its HD-over-IP beta testing out of the lab and into a broader production environment as its final stage leading up to its HD deployment.

SureWest has built its FTTP network in parts of the Sacramento region in north-central California, and says it now passes about 80,000 homes. It reports its fiber network currently provides speeds of up to 10 MB via a high-speed Internet service (both downloading and uploading), with the option to double the speed to 20 MB.

SureWest is partnering in its IP video service venture with Cisco Systems of San Jose, Calif.
