Starz Pursues Portable Internet Video Market

Starz Entertainment Group LLC announced this week announced the launch of the Vongo, an IP-based VOD service. The Windows-based application will allow Starz subscribers to download movies and other programming to PCs, laptops and portable media devices, as well to TV receivers.

With the introduction of Vongo, Starz customers will have unlimited access to more than 1,000 movies and video selections, as well as a live streaming channel. Movies and video selections may be downloaded to three eligible devices per account. The service will cost $9.99 per month. Pay-per-view movies will also be available for $3.99 per movie.

"Vongo will provide the key content application that will drive a new era in portable video delivered over the Internet," said Robert B. Clasen Starz Entertainment Group president.

Starz also announced that it was partnering with Sony Connect and Microsoft to extend the reach of Vongo in the broadband entertainment field. Sony will be incorporating Vongo in its Sony Connect video service to be launched later this year. Microsoft and Starz have been working together to ensure that high quality viewing is achieved on Windows-based devices.
