Reports says 3-D screenings outperform 2-D counterparts

The market for 3-D cinema remains minor and the number of screens set up to display a 3-D movie is not yet large enough to justify a major studio release, according to a report released in June from Screen Digest.

The report, “The Business Case for Digital 3-D Cinema Exhibition,” which currently is being marketed by Research and Markets, finds that there is a high concentration of digital 3-D screens among leading exhibitors and that about two-thirds of all 3-D equipped screens were added in the first half of 2007.

Other findings include:

  • 3-D screenings have outperformed their 2-D counterparts by more than double in attendance rates and three times in revenue;
  • Exhibitors require at least three movies to make a return on investment per annum;
  • Globally, there will be more than 5900 digital 3-D screens by 2009; 70 percent of those will be in the United States.
