MPEG LA has released the MPEG-4 Systems Patent Portfolio License to provide access under a single license to essential MPEG-4 Systems intellectual property owned by many patent holders.
MPEG LA calls for any party that believes it has patents that are necessary to the MPEG-4 Systems Standard to submit their patents to the Independent Patent Evaluator with a statement confirming its agreement with the MPEG license. The objective is to include "as much essential intellectual property as possible for the convenience of the marketplace."
The license includes patents owned by Apple Computer, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, France Telecom, S.A., Koninklijke Philips Electronics, Mitsubishi Electric, Samsung Electronics and Sun Microsystems.
