Electronics transmission and distribution company TXU Electric Delivery and Current Communications have inked a deal to transform the TXU power distribution network into a broadband-enabled smart grid.
Current will build and operate the BPL network to deliver voice, video and data and high speed Internet access to the majority of the Dallas-based TXU Electric Delivery service area, including approximately two million homes and businesses in Dallas-Fort Worth and other Texas communities. BPL provides such access over existing electrical lines by plugging into a home outlet.
The new power line system is designed to increase network reliability; prevent detect and restore customer outages and implement automated meter reading more efficiently.
When the deal becomes effective, TXU will become an equity holder in Current. Shareholders include Cinergy Corp., EnerTech Capital, Goldman Sachs, Google, Hearst, and Liberty Associated Partners LP.
