KPN launches mobile TV pilot in the Netherlands

Dutch telco KPN has initiated the pilot phase of its mobile TV service, the Netherlands’ Telecom Paper reported last week.

The service, dubbed MobielTV, is available to KPN subscribers through the company’s Surf & Mail data plan and features 11 channels of continuous programming from Nederland 1, 2 and 3; RTL 4 and 7/Z; SBS6; TMF; Eurosport; CNN; Cartoon Network and the Discovery Channel. As part of an effort to gauge viewing habits and programming preferences, KPN is offering the service for free until the end of the year.

As part of the offering, KPN is pushing the MachBlue Mobile application from Bluestreak Technology over its 3G network to subscribers. The application leverages Adobe Flash technology to provide rich media-based user experiences, such as customized user interfaces and dynamic electronic program guides.

The MobielTV service is currently available only for users of Nokia’s N95, N73 and E61 handsets.
