HD, growing ethnic channels driving satellite transponder market growth in EMEA

An explosion of video applications and the resulting need for higher bandwidth to distribute them are driving growth in the commercial satellite transponder market, according to a new report from Frost & Sullivan.

The report, “Commercial Geostationary Transponder Markets for Europe, the Middle East and Africa,” finds the increasing spread of ethnic channels and the switch to HD technology driving the growing share of the video segment in the market.

In 2006, 51.8 percent of the total demand for transponder capacity in the EMEA market was attributed to the video services segment, direct-to-home/direct broadcast satellite (DTH/DBS) and video services as well as corporate network applications (CNA). This trend will continue to dominate the market throughout the forecast period of 2003 through 2011, according to the research firm.
