HD DVD Taps Netflix for Multiproduct Promotion

You know those little red self-addressed envelopes that Netflix uses to mail standard DVDs back and forth between its 7 million American subscribers? This week the inside flap of those envelops carries a full-flap ad from the HD DVD group that offers five free HD DVD movie titles in exchange for buying one of three format-related player products.

The five movies (which the advertiser apparently has already selected for customers) include “Full Metal Jacket,” “The Hulk” and “Troy.” Purchasers of any Toshiba HD DVD player, a Toshiba HD DVD-drive laptop computer, or a Microsoft HD DVD add-on drive for the Xbox 360 game console are eligible.

Netflix remains neutral in the next-gen disc wars and rents both formats’ titles.
