Focal Press publishes 'HDTV and the Transition to Digital Broadcasting: Understanding New Television Technologies'

Addressing the need for non-technical TV professionals to interact with engineers, Focal Press has published a new book, “HDTV and the Transition to Digital Broadcasting.”

The book bridges the gap between non-technical and technical personnel by presenting an easy-to-grasp working knowledge of digital television technology and a clear understanding of the challenges of HDTV and digital broadcasting. Topics include methodologies and issues in HD production and distribution, the implementation of HD in DTV receiver technology and HDTV’s impact on the future of media. Sidebars and system diagrams illustrate how basic functional blocks fit together to create a versatile digital broadcast system. Additionally, key future trends are explored — including the integration of broadcast engineering and IT, control and descriptive metadata and DTV interactivity and personalization.

The author, Philip Cianci, worked at Philips Research in the 1980s and ’90s where he was involved in many aspects of the development of HDTV, and moved into broadcast operations at ESPN during the construction and commissioning of the all-HD digital transition. Cianci is a collaborator in the development of an HDTV archive with the Smithsonian Institution and is gathering information from industry insiders about the history of the development and implementation of HD and DTV. He has also documented HD development history in original works of art. For more information and to view the HDTV Art Gallery, visit www.hdtvarchiveproject.com.
