Enhanced VSB demo shows broadcasters potential for new service

Enhanced VSB (E-VSB) was demonstrated last month at the Association for Maximum Service Television’s 17th Annual DTV Update in Washington, D.C.

The highlight of the demonstration was a first-ever public showing of how new digital video compression technologies can be used with more robust signals transmitted simultaneously with a standard 8-VSB/MPEG-2 signal.

E-VSB gives broadcasters the flexibility to choose between bit rate and an additionally robust signal without precluding HDTV. The enhanced transmission technology is backwards-compatible with existing ATSC receivers.

Microsoft’s Windows Media 9 and H.264/MPEG4 AVC from LSI Logic and Modulus Video were the digital video compression technologies used in the robust bitstream during the demonstration. Zenith Electronics, ATI Technologies, LG Electronics, SpectraRep, HD Vision Studios and Capitol Broadcasting also assisted in the demonstration.
