DIRECTV will squeeze more channels into its available bandwidth with TANDBERG’s EN5990 real-time HD encoder, which uses MPEG-4 AVC compression.
DIRECTV has selected TANDBERG Television’s MPEG-4 AVC compression technology for use in an expansion of high-definition service by the satellite direct-to-home (DTH) provider.
In a deal valued at more than $9 million, DIRECTV will deploy the first of 26 MPEG-4 AVC HD enabled transponders this summer. The system will use TANDBERG’s EN5990 real-time HD encoder for MPEG-4 AVC and its 1+1 HD multiplexing system.
The EN5990 encoder, introduced at IBC2004, has been designed to operate in real-time TV delivery environments and guarantees no frame dropping. Other key features include extensive video pre-processing for noise reduction and horizontal picture resolution resizing.
The multiplexer will combine the MPEG-4 AVC encoded HD channels into one bandwidth efficient stream for transmission over satellite. With the launch of the new services, DIRECTV will have the ability to bring local HD programming to most of the U.S. population.
