CyberLink Corp. said this week it holds the patent for technology that is considered "essential" to the Blu-ray DVD standard. The patent relates to specs for interactive content over a network for pre-recorded Blu-ray discs (such as movies), BD-RO specification part 3-2, and BD-J profile 2. (BD-J is an interactive TV component based on Java.)
CyberLink, based in Taiwan, said it recently attended the first meeting of Blu-ray disc essential patent holders, which was held to formulate a joint patent license for Blu-ray technologies. The joint license is designed to simplify the licensing arrangements for Blu-ray and is being managed by MPEG LA on behalf of "essential patent owners."
Besides CyberLink and MPEG LA, participating companies at the patent holders meeting earlier this month in Los Angeles included Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, Koninklijke Philips Electronics, LG Electronics, Matsushita (Panasonic), Mitsubishi Electric, Pioneer, Samsung, Sanyo, Sharp, Sony, TDK, Victor Co. of Japan and Warner Home Video.
