Commerce Department data reveals top converter box coupon markets

Minneapolis/St. Paul, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and Dallas/Ft. Worth are the top five metropolitan areas to redeem National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) digital television converter box coupons, according to information released July 28 by U.S. Commerce secretary Carlos Gutierrez.

The NTIA TV Converter Box Coupon Program permits all households to request up to two coupons each worth $40 toward the purchase of a certified converter box.

The data also revealed the top five states redeeming coupons are Texas, California, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio. Puerto Rico ranked number six.

Since launching the coupon program Jan. 1, more than 21.3 million coupons have been requested and 6.6 million have been redeemed. The rate of coupon redemption among all households is 45.8 percent. Among over-the-air TV households it is 54.6 percent.
