'Casino Royale' On Track to Set Blu-ray Sales Record

These are certainly early days for both Blu-ray and HD DVD products, where sales are only a small fraction of standard DVD numbers, but the Blu-ray Disc version of the latest James Bond movie, "Casino Royale," made its way into Amazon.com's Top 10 list of DVD bestsellers upon the film's release last week. It topped off at No. 8 for all DVD sales, albeit briefly.

The sales numbers are tabulated hourly and some early adopters have taken it upon themselves to track the progress of next-gen disc sales on Amazon, according to High-Def Digest.

But sales numbers are still in the thousands--not the hundreds of thousands or millions enjoyed by some standard DVD titles. The initially good performance for "Casino Royale" could make the film the highest-selling Blu-ray title to date, replacing "The Departed," which sold about 20,000 copies in its first week on sale in February.

And what was atop Amazon's list for much of last week? The two-disc, widescreen, standard DVD version of "Casino Royale."
