CableLabs certifies LG Electronics' OCAP-based, two-way digital television

CableLabs has certified an OCAP-enabled interactive digital television manufactured by LG Electronics. The certification comes at the conclusion of wave of tests and is another major step for cable's interactive digital evolution.

OCAP (OpenCable Application Platform) serves as a standardized way for cable to ensure broad deployment and distribution of interactive services. It enables application writers to write their software once and be assured it will run on all OCAP-compliant devices produced by any manufacturer.

Demonstrated at the 2007 International CES in Las Vegas, LG Electronics' 42in OpenCable plasma HDTV set features built-in OCAP technology, multistream CableCARD capabilities and interactive capabilities, as well as HD content and interactive services like VOD and pay-per-view.

LG Electronics has licensed technology from CableLabs to implement the required OCAP middleware on its interactive integrated digital televisions and on other devices. Other consumer electronics companies licensed to build OCAP-enabled devices include ADB, Cisco, Digeo, Motorola, Pace, Panasonic, Samsung and Toshiba.
