BCAST mobile TV content protection standard trials promise providers smarter subscription models

Early in August, Singapore-based operator MobileOne and media firm MediaCorp initiated the DVB-H platform trial of vendor giant Alcatel-Lucent’s launch of the first commercial trial spotlighting the Open Mobile Alliance's new BCAST Smartcard Profile mobile TV content protection standard.

The trial is based on Alcatel-Lucent’s Mobile Interactive TV solution, with Samsung providing handsets and Gemalto providing Smartcard Profile-compliant SIM cards. This SIM-based service protection solution widens opportunities for content providers to offer more flexible mobile TV subscription models that incorporate services like pay-per-view, pay-per-time and recorded content.

“We are pleased to be able to partner with Singapore’s leading mobile communications industry players in bringing more advanced mobile TV options to Singaporeans,” said Oliver Foo, Alcatel-Lucent managing director for Singapore and Brunei. “Asian subscribers are ready for a mobile TV offering that delivers a large variety of choices, a high level of personalization, maximum interactivity and great quality of service.”
