ADI Compression Codec Enables Wireless HD

Analog Devices Inc. recently unveiled a video compression codec that the company said provides wireless transmission of HD in real time without degradation over home connections.

ADI said its codec (ADV216) is designed for the multiple technologies used for flat-panel TV monitors, Xbox and PlayStation game consoles, and HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc players that typically can require a lot of wiring.

ADV216 said its proprietary compression technology is based on the JPEG2000 standard, which is currently used for a wide range of applications. ADI said its compression scheme (branded Wavescale) allows wireless HD transmission without artifacting and includes a proprietary “spatial ultra-efficient recursive filtering” wavelet technology, permitting compression in real-time compression and scalable resolution without requiring external memory.
