WXIA to begin HD news

WXIA-TV, the Gannett-owned NBC affiliate, will begin broadcasting its local newscasts in high definition beginning in early February.

The station’s HD launch for news is timed to take advantage of an audience that is already watching a high-definition broadcast and will coincide with NBC's first presentation of the Winter Olympics entirely in HD.

The switch makes WXIA the first and only local station in Atlanta to broadcast its news in high definition. With the launch of the HDTV broadcast, WXIA-TV 11Alive News will also unveil a new state-of-the-art news set.

Earlier in the month, KSDK-TV, the Gannett-owned station in St. Louis, announced it too would begin local HD news coverage to coincide with NBC Sports' presentation of the Winter Olympics from Torino, Italy, in HD.

WUSA-TV in Washington, DC, and KUSA-TV in Denver, also produce local news in HD.
