Intel introducing next-generation video and storage platforms

At the recent Intel Developer forum, Pat Gelsinger, Intel senior VP and GM of the Digital Enterprise Group, reviewed the company’s new high performance chip set.

At the center of Intel’s plans is a new energy-efficient performance-based, next-generation microarchitecture. The multicore products will enable unique designs and fuel the industry’s most sophisticated PCs. The new designs will also help IT managers increase responsiveness and productivity while at the same time reducing real estate and power requirements.

By the end of 2006, Intel Core microarchitecture will be at the heart of many PC and server platforms. One chip demonstrated was the Conroe, a dual-core processor that reduces power consumption by 40 percent while delivering more than a 40 percent improvement in computing performance.

Conroe will be a part of Intel’s Professional Business Platform, codenamed Averill, and available in the second-half of this year. Averill will deliver world-class IT security and manageability capabilities for professional applications through the Conroe dual-core processor along with a new chipset codenamed Broadwater, Intel Virtualization Technology and the second generation of Intel Active Management Technology.

Other new chips announced include the Sossaman, targeted at server blades and servers, and Dempsey, which is a processor focused on low power devices.

By the third quarter of this year, Intel will update its Bensley platform with the Woodcrest processor, which will further reduce power consumption by 35 percent while delivering greater than 80 percent improvement in computing performance.
