As in recent years, digital signage and other narrowcasting-related technologies will play a prominent role at NAB2005, the conference and exhibition for the electronic media. Produced annually in April by the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), the conference begins its program in Las Vegas Saturday, April 16, with exhibits opening on Monday, April 18. Events conclude Thursday, April 21.
Even when other technologies are the focus, digital displays will provide the most common medium at NAB2005 for showcasing the offerings to some 1400 exhibitors. Digital communications technologies include TV and radio broadcasting, film/video production and post-production, audio production, multimedia, Internet, satellite and telecommunications. NAB2005 also will feature numerous educational forums and high-profile networking events. Last year, more than 97,500 attended NAB, including more than 22,000 international attendees.
The latest in HD news studio technology will be on display in the first-ever NAB-HD station. NAB-HD will feature live news programs and a talk show about the convention. It will be transmitted throughout the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) and to participating hotels. The station will offer convention visitors a comprehensive view of all the technical, operational and management elements required to broadcast DTV signals of all formats.
The broadcast will be transmitted in the 720P format as well as be downconverted to NTSC. The station output will include closed captioning and dynamic PSIP data. The signal will be delivered as an ATSC signal throughout the LVCC and via fiber to the Mobile Media area of the LVCC where it will be uplinked via satellite. KVVU-HD Las Vegas will retransmit the signal on its HD channel. In addition, Watchit Convention Networks (WCN) will transmit the signal via the Watchit Private Video Network to more than 30,000 hotel rooms in Las Vegas.
Another important venue related to digital signage will be the Worship Technology Conference, which will focus on technologies used in producing programming for faith-based venues. Conference sessions will cover key issues that religious organizations face when organizing broadcast productions, lighting and camera control, digital content, audio for video and more.
NAB again will join forces with the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and the Entertainment Technology Center at USC (ETC-USC) to present the fourth annual Digital Cinema Summit, April 16-17. The two days of speakers, panels and new product announcements center on the now complete Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) specifications; the issues faced in implementing them through SMPTE standards; and the impact of digital cinema on entertainment, technology and theatrical exhibition worldwide.
Addressing the convergence of technologies and content across digital media, Shane Robison, executive vice president and chief strategy and technology officer for Hewlett-Packard, will provide the keynote address for the Convergence and Content on the Move Super Session, Monday, April 18. Robison will give a glimpse of how digital technology is finally linking everything together.
