COFDM system fuels foot-powered ENG in Salt Lake City

KUTV-TV in Salt Lake City uses the MRC Reporter 2GHz COFDM system to link an on-the-street ENG shooter directly to the studio.

KUTV-TV in Salt Lake City, UT, has taken a new approach for covering news and events close to the studio – pedestrian ENG.

Instead of using a truck, the CBS-owned station sends one of its news photographers out on foot with a video camera. The camera includes an MRC Reporter COFDM 2GHz transmitter that can be received up to 1.5mi away, using horn antennas on the roof of the studio.

The KUTV studio is in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City and adjacent to the John W. Gallivan Utah Center. The center provides a constant source of video for KUTV news and public affairs.

According to Scott Jones, KUTV director of broadcast operations, the MRC Reporter was bought for wireless ENG in conjunction with a normal ENG van. The COFDM camera exceeded the station’s expectations to the degree that KUTV decided to try using it to cover events close to the station’s studio. The results were good enough to put the combination to work on a daily basis.
