Austin Community College Installs Utah Scientific Digital Router to Support Upgrade of Instructional Studio

SALT LAKE CITY — Nov. 20, 2008 — Utah Scientific, a leading manufacturer of routing switchers and related products for broadcast, today announced that Austin Community College, of Austin, Texas, has installed a UTAH-400 router and associated control panels to support the digital upgrade of a 1,200-square-foot television studio used by students studying broadcast technology. The college collaborated with systems integrator Commercial Video Systems, also located in Austin, on the renovation.

A new Utah customer, Austin Community College is using a UTAH-400/32 router, loaded 24x16 and expandable to 32x32, which in September replaced an analog router from another manufacturer. The college students are not currently producing high-definition content, but the Utah equipment was selected in part for its full HD capability. Because the UTAH-400 is already HD capable, the college's system can migrate into HD by simply connecting the HD signals as they become available.

"We always want to have modern, up-to-date products for our students so that they are learning to use the actual equipment they will find on the job," said Bill Hutchison, television studio lab coordinator at Austin Community College. "So far, what really impresses me about the router is its flexibility and how easy it's been to learn to program it. I have been familiar with Utah's top-of-the-line products and its fine reputation for many years and have total confidence in the selection we've made."

Originally, the studio plan called for separate audio routing, but the UTAH-400 enables embedded audio, which has streamlined the system by eliminating unnecessary switching matrices. The current system also represents a reduction in complexity over the previous analog set-up, because all four of the studio's VTRs use a single, central controller rather than their own individual controllers.

"We designed the UTAH-400 routing switcher to provide a single platform for all digital router applications, small or large," said Tom Harmon, president and CEO of Utah Scientific. "Recently, we have made a number of key sales to educational institutions. Like Austin Community College, they invariably seek systems that are cost effective while at the same time being technologically sophisticated. That combination sums up everything we strive for at Utah Scientific."
