WSFA-TV Installs Video Technics Apella Media Server

Raycom Media's WSFA-TV in Montgomery, Ala., has implemented a server system for ingest, management and playout of HD news clips and graphics that is based on the Video Technics Apella HDS Media Server.

The system installed includes the Apella server, an input channel and two outputs—all configured for multi-rate video, along with VT Media Exchange software, and HD VFW codecs.

"We were looking for a lower cost HD server that would fit our budget, to support our news effort with opens, bumps, and day in/day out HD playback for news clips," said Morris Pollock, WSFA chief engineer. "After looking at competing solutions, we found the value Video Technics provided to be refreshing."

Pollock added that he had been pleased with the level of support received from Video Technics during the implementation phase of the project. The station's work flow was enhanced by the installation, allowing the video editor to produce content and then place it in a folder for later playout.

"It makes our job easy," Pollock said.

The Apella server supports multiple formats, including 10-bit uncompressed video, and works with the automation system controlling the station's Snell & Wilcox Kahuna switcher.
