Best Buy, America's biggest consumer electronics chain, is trying to set the pace for undercutting the competition in Blu-ray titles by reportedly offering a number of mostly older titles starting at $8 when Black Friday rolls around on Nov. 27.
According to a Black Friday "leaked" Best Buy ad on the Web site BlackFriday.info, such catalog films as "The Departed," "Dirty Dancing," and "Silence of the Lambs" will be featured for $8 — with some newer titles that enjoyed big theater runs going for $9 or $10, notably "Monsters vs. Aliens," "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and "Fast & Furious."
Prior to disclosure of Best Buy's price points, some other major big-box retailers such as Target were signing up for Blu-ray sales that averaged about $1 over Best Buy's — although prices are subject to change on-site, despite advertised newspaper inserts that are typically printed weeks in advance of Black Friday and beyond. (Several retailers also will offer some standard DVD titles of fairly recent movies for as little as $4 on Black Friday, and perhaps the entire weekend following Thanksgiving.)
Best Buy will continue offering its Insignia home-brand Blu-ray players for $99, as well brand names such as Sony and Samsung for about $150.
