Sprint Nextel explains spectrum-monitoring reimbursement

As 2GHz TV broadcast auxiliary service (BAS) relocation continues, questions are arising about what is and isn’t eligible relocation compensation from Sprint Nextel. The latest item is spectrum monitors.

A posting at 2ghzrelocation.com Dec. 2 said Sprint Nextel regards spectrum monitoring as necessary for comparable facilities and will reimburse broadcasters for the expense. The company has set a $3500 cap per receive site for spectrum monitoring solutions.

According to Sprint Nextel, there are three basic scenarios for spectrum monitor reimbursement, but others, including permutations of the three basic ones, may also exist.

They are:

  • One receiver at a site and one link for backhaul to the station. A station receives $3500 for the spectrum monitor for that receiver and a $1000 software/monitor allowance for the whole system — in the case where there is not a single receive site.
  • Two receivers at a receive site and one backhaul link to the station. A video switcher is used to switch between the two receivers. As with the previous scenario, the station receives $3500 for the spectrum monitor, a $1000 software allowance and a $1000 to switch the IF outputs from the receivers into the spectrum monitor.
  • Two receivers at a receive site and two links to backhaul to the station. This station will receive $7000 for two spectrum monitors and the $1000 software monitor allowance.
