Norfolk to become USDTV’s fifth market

U.S. Digital Television has selected Norfolk, VA, as its fifth market and the first on the East Coast for the company’s all-digital wireless TV service, USDTV announced last week.

The low-cost cable alternative will begin broadcasting this spring in the Norfolk/Hampton Roads market over the new digital TV facilities of LIN TV. USDTV has also created a Norfolk Web site to take advance subscriptions.

USDTV will offer Norfolk subscribers more than 30 all-digital channels from local stations and the company’s lineup of leading cable networks. The service includes cable networks such as ESPN, Discovery, Disney and the FOX News Channel for $19.95 per month.

In November 2005, USDTV announced a $25.75 million funding agreement with major media investment partners, including: Fox Television Stations, Hearst-Argyle Television, McGraw-Hill Broadcasting, LIN TV, Morgan Murphy Stations and Telcom DTV. The strategic will enable the company to aggressively rollout its service into new markets.

The USDTV service is sent over-the-air through the digital signals of the company’s local broadcast partners and provides all the local stations and national network programming from ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, along with the USDTV cable networks. The service is received through a standard VHF/UHF antenna connected to a USDTV set-top box which produces a digital-quality picture on an analog TV or an HDTV quality picture on an HD-ready TV for those programs broadcast in that format.
