China settles on digital TV standard

China formalized its digital TV terrestrial transmission standard last month, according to a report in the China Daily.

China has more than 400 million TV households. Only about one-third has access to cable TV, the only possible existing source of digital TV. Most digital transmission is expected to be done via terrestrial broadcast, according to the report.

The terrestrial transmission standard for digital TV, which combines elements of two technologies developed at separate universities in China, will be mandatory for broadcasters in the country beginning Aug. 1, 2007.
