WDBJ-TV, the CBS affiliate in Roanoke, VA, has converted its entire digital news production operations to a comprehensive Thomson Grass Valley shared-storage system for its daily newscasts.
The conversion includes multiple K2 Media Server and client systems; Aurora ingest, browse, edit and playout workstations; NetCentral monitoring software; and on-site training from Grass Valley engineers.
When the system is fully implemented within the next few months, the station's news department will bring stories to air faster and easier by leveraging the client/server architecture that supports IT-centric, file-based playout and distribution workflows and providing new levels of network control.
The entire Grass Valley Aurora suite of applications takes advantage of the Grass Valley K2 Media Server storage architecture. The various workstations located throughout the WDBJ-TV newsroom are linked to a Grass Valley Open Storage Area Network (SAN) environment based on the Grass Valley K2 Media Server. This infrastructure lets multiple users access the same files simultaneously. It also allows editors to begin working on the Aurora Edit system as footage is being digitized into the system and to get finished segments to air quicker.
WDBJ-TV purchased the system from Grass Valley dealer Digital Video Group.
