Tektronix takes base station test to the EDGE

Continuing to improve its wireless maintenance offerings, Tektronix, based in Beaverton, OR, has added Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) capabilities to its handheld NetTek base analyzer, making it the only base station tester to offer a toolbox feature set. This addition enables Global Systems for Mobile Communications (GSM) operators to easily meet the new measurement requirements presented in deployed EDGE networks. Tektronix is the first manufacturer to offer EDGE measurements in a handheld, toolbox form factor.

EDGE technology provides operators with a cost-effective way to offer advanced data services within existing spectrum, according to the company. Deployment cost is low because EDGE doesn't require a 3G license, and it utilizes the existing frame structures and carrier bandwidths from GSM networks.

Once the EDGE network is deployed, operators must ensure it is successfully maintained in order to retain and increase mobile subscribers and achieve return on investment. To effectively enable operators to meet these requirements, Tektronix has added EDGE support to its proven handheld NetTek analyzer's portfolio of daily maintenance measurement capabilities.

The Tektronix NetTek enables operators to evaluate the RF interface for EDGE services, helping to ensure a positive subscriber experience with data throughput. By measuring Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) and Carrier to Interference (C/I, both essential measurements in EDGE networks), technicians can determine if the RF portion of the network is performing optimally and immediately address any degradation issues.

The NetTek analyzer is a rugged portable platform with multi-standard measurement capability. The NetTek fills the gap between expensive, full-compliance testing tools and low-cost instruments designed to perform only one measurement. The instrument's modular architecture supports a range of BTS transmitter measurements for standards including UMTS/WCDMA, EDGE, GSM, CDMA2000 1x EV-DO, CDMA2000, cdmaOne (IS-95) and IS-136. The instrument's Windows-based user interface simplifies operation and minimizes training. The compact battery-powered tool, which weighs just over 12 lbs (4 kg), is lightweight and rugged for transport to remote sites.
