Report forecasts 500 million digital television households by 2011

About 500 million homes worldwide are expected to have digital television by 2011, and integrated media centers will be at the heart of the digital home, according to a new report from Research and Markets.

The report, “2007 Global Digital Media report — Volume 2 — Content and Application Markets,” forecasts an acceleration in consumer uptake of digital television through the next five years. The growth of digital television is expected to be strong in Asia. Cable will be the dominant delivery system, followed by satellite (DTH TV), digital terrestrial TV (DTTV) and broadband TV (IPTV), according to the report.

Other findings:

  • There will be between 20 and 25 million IPTV subscribers worldwide by 2010 — up from the current market of about 5 million users.
  • In 2008, an estimated 5 billion music tracks and 40 million feature films will be downloaded worldwide via the Internet.
