Over-the-top video begins shaking up distribution model

Over-the-top video — or the delivery of television via broadband Internet — has the potential to cause a major disruption to business as usual in the distribution of television, says Colin Dixon, director of broadband media strategies for market planning and research firm The Diffusion Group.

In a pair of TDG letters distributed over the past couple of weeks, Dixon and the research firm’s president and principal analyst, Michael Greeson, explore the ramifications of a product offering from video rental provider Netfilx that lets television viewers stream movies via the Internet to their living room TVs.

Dixon has joined us to discuss what he believes will be the impact of this and other over-the-top video efforts on viewers, TV networks, affiliates, and cable and satellite TV operators.

Recorded Oct. 6, this week’s Sound Off is presented as an audio podcast.
